Skiing in Sweden is completely different from skiing in the Alps. Ski resorts in Sweden are set in a landscape of forests, lakes and wilderness. There are about twenty six ski resorts in Sweden. The main resorts are Åre, Sälen and Vemdalen. Among other resorts are Branäs, Tärnaby/Hemavan, Indra Fjäll and Isaberg. The world's most northerly ski resort is Riksgränsen, about 1,000 km north of Stockholm.
Åre was host of the 2007 Alpine World Champoinships and is the largest ski resort in Scandinavia. Åre is a distinctive resort stretching 10 km's along a frozen lake and luxuriating in a beautiful setting amid low blanketed mountains and snow-covered forests. The ski lift system is on the Åreskutan mountain with its highest peak at a high of 1420 meters, the peak can be reached by snowmobile lift. In all there are about 100 kms of quality ski runs. There is night skiing every evening until week 10. The night skiing is between 6pm and 8pm. There is also a dedicated snowboard park, which is floodlit in the evenings.
Sälen is probably the most popular resort among Swedes. It is a great spot for intermediate skiers. Sälen offers a total of six ski resorts in one, all of them interconnected with the four ski areas: Lindvallen, Tandådalen, Högfjället and Hundfjället. Sälen ski resort offers 160 downhill runs, 9 contiguous green slopes, 300 km cross-country skiing, a fun snow park, snowboarding and 100+ lifts.
Vemdalen is one of the smaller ski resorts in Sweden. The ski resort consists of the areas Björnrike, Klövsjö/Storhogna and Vemdalsskalet. The pistes are ideal for beginners and families, and the whole are is very beautiful. In total there is 53 slopes with 30 lifts, and about 180 kms of marked cross-country skiing trails.
