Germany provides several different regions for ski holidays, each of unique character. The best known region is the Bavarian Alps, but you can also go skiing in the Bavarian Forest, Black Forest, Hartz and Fichtelgebirge. If you are looking for downhill skiing and snowboarding, the Bavarian Alps is probably the best choice; many of the other areas offer less challenging alpine skiing and are more suitable for cross-country skiing. Germany's most famous ski area is Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the Bavarian Alps. It is located at the foot of the country's highest mountain, Zugspitze, and has 43 pistes served by 38 lifts, and a cable car direct to the summit of Zugspitze from where you have access to a network of red runs home. Once a year the professionals test their skills here in one of the world cup competitions, the Kandahar downhill in Garmisch. There are lots of little villages making up the Bavarian ski region, centered on Garmisch. The area is generally less expensive than the resorts of Austria or Switzerland and the scenery is beautiful. Other resorts in the area includes Oberstdorf, Oberammergau and Berchtesgadener Land. These resorts are not as big as Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but all have decent skiing and snowboarding for riders of most levels. The largest ski region north of the Alps is called Sauerland. There are several well known ski resorts there including places as Winterberg and Willingen. Schwartzwald (Black Forest) is also an excellent place for cross-country and alpine skiing. The Thuringian Forest, Hartz and Eifel are all regions good for skiing.
