Skiing in Asia

In Asia skiing is not traditionally a major sport, but in recent years activities have picked up dramatically in countries like China, Japan, India and South Korea.

Japan is one of the top skiing and snowboarding destinations in the world. Today there are more than 700 ski resorts in Japan with plenty of snow. For the visitor this means there is an almost inexhaustible variety of terrain to choose from.

In China, where a decade ago only a few hundred people had skied before, there are now a million people skiing. The ski resorts can be hard to get to, but once you get there the terrain is reasonable good.

With the Himalayas for a playground, India should be a more prominent skiing and snowboarding destination than it is. The sheer height of the mountains guaranties great snow covering and the extent of the terrain is limitless. India is an off-pisters dream. As is the case in China, the ski resorts in India can be hard to get to.

With mountains covering 70 per cent of the Korean peninsula, South Korea has the potential to attract more foreign visitors to its ski slopes. Four of the 13 ski resorts in South Korea are within an hour of Seoul.

Other skiing destinations in Asia includes Iran and Kazakhstan. Especially Iran has a number of well developed ski resorts.
